About
We founded Acadian Sturgeon and Caviar Inc in March 2005 with the aim of producing sturgeon and caviar in aquaculture. Acknowledging the long time needed to produce sturgeon caviar in aquaculture (7 to 10 years) we found product lines that would bring the necessary cash flow long before that. Since the beginning we started producing and selling live sturgeon (fertilized eggs, larvae and juveniles) from both Atlantic (Acipenser oxyrhynchus) and shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum) all over the world, for aquaculture, restocking, research or as ornamental fish. This is a quick way of producing cash flow while building our brand and aquaculture business.
By supplying live sturgeon for restocking (for example in Poland and Germany for restocking in rivers flowing into Baltic Sea) and research (United States, Canada) we also contribute to the conservation and restoration of sturgeon species.
Also acknowledging that at the end of the aquaculture production cycle of 7 to 10 years we will still need the time to develop the markets for our products, we turned to a over 100 years old, traditional and sustainable sturgeon fishery on Saint John River to use a small number of fish for market development. Usually aquaculture is developed when is too late after over fishing a stock (it happened with so many species, as for example the salmon or cod) people start developing aquaculture to supply the growing demand. We believe this is wrong, so we decided to use a small number of sustainably harvested sturgeon (max 350 fish/year) to develop markets for our coming aquaculture production.
We intend to use the wild products as our standard, striving to bring the quality of aquaculture products as close as possible to the wild fish quality! There is no reason why we cannot manipulate the land based aquaculture conditions to obtain a premium quality! Some people try to dramatically speed up the growth and raise fish in recirculating systems with very high densities, similar we what we did to chicken grown in cages (factory like setup) some decades ago! Our technology although clean and low environment impact is more similar with the free range growing of chicken (land based tanks with flow through, temperature recovery systems and restoring the effluent water to similar quality as the intake)!
Here we are, walking the dream, growing our markets and sales and building up our aquaculture stocks. Sustainability of a business is reflected in all three aspects of it: economical, environmental and social responsibility. We participate in all of those there, being economical viable (we been profitable since 2008), environmental sustainable (our operation is inland with minimal impact on environment and we also do a lot of population studies on the wild sturgeon) and social responsible (we develop a rural business and employ local people, we participate in Relay for Life of the Canadian Cancer Society, donate products and money to charities etc).
We work hard but we really love what we do and take pride that we were able to build a very difficult, sustainable business using our knowledge and passion for sturgeon and help from some wonderful people around us.To our knowledge, our strategy to develop a sturgeon aquaculture business using live sturgeon sales and sustainable harvest of a wild sturgeon stock is unique in the whole world!
